or%20unknown%20reasons.%20Here%20we%20show%20that%20the%20systemic%20response%20to%20ischaemic%20injury%20aggravates%20chronic%20atherosclerosis.%20After%20myocardial%20infarction%20or%20stroke%2C%20Apoe-%5C%2F-%20mice%20developed%20larger%20atherosclerotic%20lesions%20with%20a%20more%20advanced%20morphology.%20This%20disease%20acceleration%20persisted%20over%20many%20weeks%20and%20was%20associated%20with%20markedly%20increased%20monocyte%20recruitment.%20Seeking%20the%20source%20of%20surplus%20monocytes%20in%20plaques%2C%20we%20found%20that%20myocardial%20infarction%20liberated%20haematopoietic%20stem%20and%20progenitor%20cells%20from%20bone%20marrow%20niches%20via%20sympathetic%20nervous%20system%20signalling.%20The%20progenitors%20then%20seeded%20the%20spleen%2C%20yielding%20a%20sustained%20boost%20in%20monocyte%20production.%20These%20observations%20provide%20new%20mechanistic%20insight%20into%20atherogenesis%20and%20provide%20a%20novel%20therapeutic%20opportunity%20to%20mitigate%20disease%20progression.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%22Jul%2019%2C%202012%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1038%5C%2Fnature11260%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%221476-4687%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22http%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%5C%2Fpubmed%5C%2F22763456%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22TBMD7NUH%22%2C%22FKKDHVTI%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222012-08-10T07%3A26%3A21Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
